Or, wait... I have no idea about those ones that just count down. Weird.

The numbers tell you which edition the books is, I think. I don't know why they count down...it seems pretty obvious that if it's the 10th edition, there were 9 editions before it. ;)

I'm not so sure. The example numbers of "10 9 8 7 6 5 4" were on the copyright page of a Garfield Comics book, which I'm mostly positive was the first edition.
